Abstract
This research highlights the significance of analyzing sentence structures in literary works to support the enhancement of Indonesian language literacy, with a particular focus on the folktale “Malin Kundang.” The study addresses the use of simple and compound sentences within the text and examines their impact on readers’ comprehension. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, this research employs content analysis of the “Malin Kundang” text while drawing upon prior research as a primary reference. Data were collected through documentation methods and analyzed by identifying, classifying, and interpreting the forms of simple and compound sentences. The findings reveal that compound sentences are more frequently used than simple sentences, particularly in illustrating the plot and causal relationships. Simple sentences, on the other hand, are typically employed to emphasize specific points of information. These results underscore the importance of sentence structure variation in folktales for fostering textual cohesion and coherence, as well as enhancing narrative engagement.
